What is Drop D?
Drop D lowers only the thickest string — from E down a whole step to D — while the other five strings stay in standard tuning. The result: D–A–D–G–B–E. Power chords become one-finger shapes and the low end gets heavier, which is why Drop D shows up everywhere from folk to metal.
How to get to Drop D
Start from standard tuning, tap start above, and pluck the low E string. The tuner will show the peg to use and tell you the pitch is too high — loosen that peg slowly until the needle centers on D. The other strings shouldn't need to move; pluck each one to confirm.
Coming back to standard? Use the standard guitar tuner and tighten the low string back up to E.
